The New Yam festival is a time of great celebration across many West African cities. Actually tradition hold that no one should eat New yam until the festival has been held. Men are normally not involved in the preparation of pounded yam, but as the world evolved i guess things changed. Preparation of the delicacy here involved the wives and young women of the small community showing there skills in preparation. With each stroke of the pestle, these women preserve tradition by chanting and singing, and telling tales of the past.
